Animal Totems

Heathenry

There was a Shamanic aspect to both Celtic and Heathen spirituality. Essential Power Animals like the Stag were used by Heathens as reflective focal points and shields to ward, bless and heal. Each person discovered their Animal Totem Power Animal Fetch, a Spirit Guide in animal shape with powers.

Each Animal Totem had different traits and powers that they could bestow upon a Heathen supplicant. Common Heathen Animal Totems included the Bear, Blue Jay, Bull (Cow), Cat, Dog, Eagle, Elk, Goat, Hare, Horse (Mare), Oxen, Ram (Sheep), Rooster (Chicken), and Stag (Deer).

The World Tree (Tree of Life) was known as Yggdrasil by the Heathens. An immense hallowed Ash (Oak, Pine) Tree, Yggdrasil was also symbolic of many things including the interconnectedness of the Nine Worlds of the Heathen Norse cosmology. The leafy branches of Yggdrasil reached towards the heavens, while, the sturdy roots burrowed deeply into the earth stretching outwards in many directions.

The World Tree Yggdrasil was home to numerous Animal Totems such as a giant golden rooster named Fjalar, a golden eagle named Vidofnir, a goat named Heiðrún, a red squirrel named Ratatoskr; as well as, four red deer stags named Dáinn, Duneyrr, Duraþrór and Dvalinn.

The golden eagle Vidofnir perched atop the massive Ash tree represented the all seeing eye of goodwill angelic watchers. The red squirrel Ratatoskr ran up and down Yggdrasil bearing messages to the golden eagle atop Yggdrasil regarding the activities of the wyrm Níðhöggr who dwelt beneath one of the three roots of the tree and constantly gnawed at it.

Together the wyrm and the snakes who continually mauled the roots of the World Tree represented the demonic crocodile reptilian usurper energies introduced into the human lifewaves on the planet by the fallen angels. These crocodile reptilians (who were only partially human) had deficient "whatever it takes" vibrational frequencies that reveled in destroying, harming, maiming and murdering the Alfar and Valar sky immortals and their progeny.

The goat Heiðrún who consumed the foliage and grasses around the World Tree produced a cauldron full of mead daily. This indicated to the discerning intellect that sheep milk products such a cheese would be beneficial and healing for Heathens to consume.

The four red deer stags Dainn, Duneyrr, Durathror and Dvalin craned their necks to eat from four branches of Yggdrasil. This symbolic adage was meant to convey the fact that the four red deer stags consumed copious amounts of fruit like apples, cherries and pears from tree branches.

Then when they travelled the four directions of the Natural World, they deposited the seeds of the fruit into the Earth via their feces. In due course, the seeds sprouted and grew into apple, cherry and pear trees which bore fruit for Heathens to feast on. Next Back
