Shamans received advice, teaching, protection and assistance on their journeys from spirit guides by visions, dreams, altered states, telepathic communications and empathetic observations of nature Shamanic Healing was needed when a person or an animal became ill or dis-eased either through power loss or power intrusions. Trauma, grief, bereavement and shock all are catalysts for soul essence loss. This created an emptiness, a soul hole that could be filled with negativity or imbalanced power could intrude. The purpose of Shamanic Healing was to restore strength by unblocking the flow of energy (physical, mental, emotional, psychic, psychological). Shamanic Healing involved knowing how to be here now - not just in one dimension but in many dimensions simultaneously. In this manner one gained knowledge regarding how one acquired power and knowledge. Whenever the Shaman sought personal path revelations, the guiding spirits called for a period of withdrawal, of solitary reflection, prayer and meditation. It was a transformative and transmutative inward journey of purification, healing and intuitive growth. It could be a dangerous journey where the shadows within often confronted the soul as the imperfections of character were brought to the surface for cleansing. The caterpillar dreamed of ways to become a butterfly and woke up knowing how.
Animal Totem Dragonfly Although the Shaman was in a trance State of Awareness (light, medium, deep) during Shamanic Journeying, the Shaman was totally conscious to other dimensions and alternate realties that were contiguous with ordinary waking state consciousness. Even though these States of Awareness were contiguous with ordinary waking state consciousness, they were beyond the normal perceptual range of most individuals. During these trance states Shamans were in control of their awareness as they communicated with spirits, had visions and gathered information. The trance states varied from being similar to the state of being deeply engrossed in a book to being similar to the state of vivid imagery which often occurred during the moments between sleep and wakefulness. The deep trance states were most similar to Lucid Dreaming where the dreamer not only had vivid sensory images but also interacted with them. Lucid Dreaming was a Shamanic technique for working with and within the Dreaming state. It involved being consciously awake during an out of body experience. While their physical body was asleep, the Shaman left it behind to go into the Dreaming where the Shaman explored inner landscapes, observed personal dreams as they unfolded and often actively participated in them as they progressed by altering and fine tuning aspects of the dream itself.
The Shaman journeyed with
the person to be healed into moments of intense pain or agony that lied hidden in
the shadowy recesses of their Spirit skein. Together with the help of Power Animals and Spirit Guides, they shined the light of insight on them,
acknowledged them and revitalized the soul essence.
