The Animal Totem of Gemini was the Twins and in ancient Rome the Animal Totem of the twin founders Romulus and Remus was the Wolf. The Animal Totem of Cancer was the Crab. The Animal Totem of Leo was the Lion. The Animal Totems of Scorpio were the Dove, Eagle, Scorpion, Snake and Phoenix. The Animal Totem of Sagittarius was the mythic Centaur (half man, half horse). The Animal Totem of Capricorn was the Goat. The Animal Totem of Pisces was the Fish and so on. In the picture above on the left of a Western Astrology Horoscope Wheel, numerous Astrological Sign Animal Totems were depicted. The ancient technique of Chinese Astrology was substantially different from the Western (Heliocentric; Placidian) System. Unlike Western Astrology, the positions of the sun, moon and planets at the time and place of a person's birth were not calculated for Chinese Astrology. Based on traditional astronomy and calendars, Chinese Astrology was centered around Animal Totems. Chinese Astrology was based on two separate interacting cycle over a sixty year period. The first cycle was comprised of ten Heavenly Stems. They were the Yin forms and the Yang forms of the Five Elements (Earth, Fire, Metal, Water, Wood). The second cycle was comprised of the Earthly Branches of the twelve Animal Totem Signs (boar, dog, dragon, horse, monkey, ox, rabbit, rat, rooster, sheep, snake, tiger).
A stone carving at Qingyanggong
Temple in Chengdu, China of the Daoist Yin/Yang symbol surrounded by the twelve
Chinese Astrology Animal Totems was shown in the picture above on the right. In
Chinese Astrology, there were Animal Totems assigned for the hour, day, month
and year a person was born. For instance someone might be born in the hour of
the Boar, on the day of the Monkey, in the month of the Horse, in the year of
the Horse.
