Angels have been defined in dictionaries as spiritual beings superior to humans in power and intelligence, as attendant spirits or guardians and as messengers and harbingers in the celestial hierarchy. The prophets, seers, sages, shamans, teachers, mystics and wise persons of all Ages have been blessed, graced, guided and instructed by these ministering spirits. Christianity, Judaism, Islam and almost all religious and spiritual belief systems including those of the Babylonians, Assyrians, Greeks, Romans and Vikings contained references regarding the intercessions of angels in their scriptures or sacred writings.
Although the word angel is derived from "angelos", the Greek word for messengers, there were numerous roles angels played in Creation. Besides the familiar guardian, healing and warrior angels there were also angels of art, birth, builders of form, death, illumination, inspiration, love, nature, science, song, transformation and writing to name just a few. One of their most important functions on Earth was to nurture and assist in the development and unfoldment of human potential. Beings of great love, light and power, angels existed long before the dawning of human history.
Like people, they belonged to clans
or families. Angels were similar to humans in that they also walked the paths of
evolution; but, the immortality of the angels meant that their journey could also
be both arduous and painful at times.
