Receiving the Shamanic Call

Power Animals may appear as a person performs routine daily activities or in a dream when they sleep. Each time that they enter a person's life with a sacred communication, it is a blessing from Spirit.

Red Tailed Hawk acted as Power Animal Spirit Guide for me by being the messenger of Spirit to give me the Shamanic Call. To me the Red Tail Hawk acts as a Spirit Messenger of Inspiration Words.

As a Wind Dancer of the Four Earth Directions and Feather Shield of Visionary Wisdom, the Red Tail Hawk directs life currents with patient focus and serves Unity amidst abundance diversity well. Here is the story of how Red Tail Hawk gave me the Shamanic Call first in the mid 1980's and then again in 2001.

Over the past decade, the animals have been communicating with me more than ever both during the day and at night through dreams. When I first did my animal totem cards, Hawk was one of them. I remembered the times that I travelled up and down I-5 between Oregon and California on my visits to Mt Shasta and Nevada City. All along the way, hawks circled overhead ensuring the pathway ahead was clear of danger, fulfilling their role as protectors.

Usually, I saw them circling overhead or a short distance to the right or left of the highway. It happened so frequently and with such intensity that I accepted their presence was not happenstance. They were definitely there because I was travelling down that highway.

They were acting as scouts, as lookouts for me, as I moved over unfamiliar terrain. I felt their presence, welcomed it, but it was more watchful than it was verbally communicative. One time, as I drove through the desert near Chico, Ca, a Red Tail Hawk almost landed on the hood of my car. There was no one else driving on the road nearby, no other cars.

Hawk keep flying right in front of my windshield. Hawk was trying so hard to get my attention, but my thoughts were foggy, I just thought Hawk was swooping by for some up close and personal greetings. To confirm that yes the hawks were on scout duty that day. My primary concern was that the Hawk not injure himself. Only with hindsight did I wonder if maybe Hawk wanted me to pull over to the shoulder of the road so that he could have a word or two of "Hawk Speak" with me, maybe even to communicate something of importance to me.

The Red Tailed Hawk seemed frustrated and disappointed with me and tried several times before moving on. Maybe the Red Tailed Hawk was just saying hello but then again I might have missed a significant message by not pulling over to the side of the road to listen. The incident haunted me on and off for years. I was not ready to hear his wisdom words to me then. My spirit phone keep ringing with the "Shamanic Call" but many years would pass before I would answer that call.

But Hawk is patient, Hawk's feathers were not ruffled, Hawk flows lightly above the currents of the river, enjoying the fresh breezes, the beauty of the landscape. Hawk never loses sight of the overall objective, Hawk always sees both the forest and the trees. Nothing would prevent Hawk from delivering his message, eventually when the stars were aligned properly, when the tides had turned, when the winds of life blew me in the right direction, when the wrong door closed and the right one opened, when ... So Hawk circled round the spiral dance of my days and ways, watching and waiting for the welcome mat to be put out.

It was not long after I went to the bird hop to get an insect, peanut butter hanging strip for the Flicker who kept gazing intently at me from the wooden railing of my balcony, trying to connect with me, calling to me, calling to me, calling to me, that the majestic Red Tail Hawk delivered its message. It happened while I was talking to someone on the phone of course, how apropos! Hawk knew with his inner sense of knowing that I had recently read in an animal totem book that the Flicker was a totem bird of shamans and that I was intrigued with the association and receptive to change.

As I was talking on the phone, I suddenly was impulsed to look out my dining room window which faced the bottom apartment next door just as Hawk very serenely landed on the railing of the balcony. Hawk was not hunting or resting but in a state of active expectancy. Hawk turned a little sidewise to show off his red grounding, tail feathers and then continued to wait patiently for me to get off the phone. After I hung up, Hawk continued to sit there for another few minutes. This time I communicated telepathically with Hawk saying, "I am ready to hear your message now".

Hawk gave me a penetrating gaze, then hopped gently to the ground below and gracefully went into a large cluster of bushes, gazed back at me to send me an empowered seed message and then disappeared from sight into the undergrowth. I sensed that Hawk wanted me to go to my meditation area, get out my alchemical watering can, and sprinkle it on the seed message, so I retreated to the comfort of the sofa since I'm not much on austerities, this lifetime anyway.

I pondered awhile the many meanings attributed to Hawk as a totem, and the seed message blossomed intuitively to the point where I perceived that what the messenger Hawk Totem was telling me was to become the messenger and to lovingly and patiently bring spiritual knowledge from the heights and ground it by spreading messages amongst the communities of lightworkers. As Above So Below.

Not long after that I relocated to Florida and spent many years in priestessly hermitage, doing both Personal and Planetary, Shamanic Soul Retrieval and Healing by creating and expanding the Blessings Cornucopia website before returning to the Portland, Oregon area in spring of 2006...Go back
