The alchemical origins of magic transcend time since they encompass both the spiritually etheric, encircling sea of non-time, as well as, the material space-time continuum. The nascence of a magical alchemical tradition in recorded history can be traced as far back as Egypt, beyond that lies the speculative shrouded mists of lost civilizations and starlore. The life stories of the alchemical magicians suggest that theirs was more of a quest for spiritual enlightenment, immortality, and ascendant transcendence than the quest for a specific linear formula for either a magical philosophers stone or the material riches of silver and gold. Even though alchemy is often viewed as an ancestral science to chemistry, medicine, philosophy, psychology, and quantum physics; it is also an integral part of many religious, spiritual, and magical traditions. Since alchemical magical traditions focus on the multiplicity of manifest creation as well as the matrix of interpenetrating, unmanifest latencies, no linear, one dimensional definition will suffice. There is a magical synergy about alchemical magic that is more than just the sum of its parts. Many of the magical alchemical knowledge and principles were transcribed and encoded for transmission in the form of hieroglyphs, symbols, paintings, icons, poems, pictorial languages, ciphers, songs, coded alphabets, and sacred architecture. This process of dissemination not only protected magical spiritual knowledge from being profaned but also acted like a powerful impetus to push beyond the envelope, to transcend the boundaries of normalcy and to truely reach for the starry heights twinkling Above, beckoning the seeker of understanding Below to strive to become the Magician Sage. One of the most popular and reknown of these knowledge encodings has been passed on as the oracular Tarot Arcana. To the magician alchemist, the Arcana are archetypal expressions that encompass all aspects of being from the minutest particles and cells of the body to the most distant galaxies and their largest stars; from DNA spirals to emotional moods; from survival needs to vast spiritual aspirations.
The symbolism and
meditative meanings of the Tarot Arcana are a way to intuit and interpret the
outworkings of the One Mind, the Greek "Logos". Since the Arcana transcend the
normal boundaries of relative time and space, deciphering their mysteries
empowers the magician with the ability to transmute, change, restore,
revitalize, and transform.
Another way of interpreting alchemical magical knowledge encodings for the process of magical transformation was the Zodiac. The astrological Zodiac was comprised of the twelve Astrological Signs and their corresponding planets, stars, and constellations. The Zodiac finds outward expression through Astrology which synthesizes how the planets and stars at the time of birth on the Earth imprinted the physical body, mind, emotions, psyche, and soul with patterns and potentials that affect every area of life in progressive cycles of growth and evolution. The truism "As Above So Below" is as apropos today as it was in the times of Hermes and the ancient Egyptian magicians. Since some magicians work with breath, vitality, and the Doctrine of Correspondences, they might consult the Zodiac before initiating any significant transformational magical ritual, procedure, or process. For more information about Astrology and the Zodiac please see the Astrological Astrology Planets Zodiac Articles. The Land, the Divine Forest, the Sacred Groves, and the Holy Wells were enlivened and hallowed by the presence of the Nature Spirits. From the dancing blue tipped flames of the hearth fire to the sparkling golden candle lights of the lapping brook, the elemental beings of air, water, fire, and earth enliven and sanctify all the Days and Ways of the landscape of daily living. The elemental spirits of earth, wind, fire, air, water, streams, forests, plants, trees, mountains, stones, the land, sky, and sea which are sentient in their own right and how their own divine purpose and path which often overlaps and intersects with that of the magical practitioner. During rituals magicians often call upon the Nature Spirit Elementals to assist them. Each of the alchemical elements contain magically archetypal and alchemical properties: Earth is linked with tangible manifestation, physical materiality, fertile creativity, copper ore, and Conjunction. Water is linked with cleansing ablution, fluidic purification, osmotic luminosity, the metal tin, and Dissolution. Fire is linked with initiative action, sacred vigor, dynamic transformation, the metal lead, and Calcination. Air is linked with manifest spirit, vital communications, sympathetic vibrancy, the metal iron, and Separation. Ether is linked with quintessence, the space-time continuum, the vital principle of collective universality, the magnetically radiant Archaeus, and Mysterium Magnum.
