Some archaeologists think that the ruins at Tiahuanaco are the oldest in the
world and that it was once a thriving port of call. Located about twelve miles
south of the southern tip of Lake Titicaca, at an altitude of 13,300 feet, the
remains of ancient site of Tiahuanaco predate the arrival of the Incas.
Archaeologists speculate that since the site is now about 800 feet above the
edge of the lake the waters must have dropped 800 feet and receded for about 12
