Background Beliefs Overview Traditions
Islam, along with Christianity and Judaism, traced its origins to the prophet and patriarch Ibrahim (Abraham), since the prophets of all three religions, Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, were descended directly from his sons - Muhammad from the elder son Ismail (Ishmael), and Jesus and Moses from the younger son, Isaac.
The word Islam meant complete submission to God's will and was derived from a word that connotated peace. Muslims believed that conscious surrender of one's whole being to the guidance, law, and will of the One God, Allah, would bring one security and peace.
Within Islam, the peace and
security that a stable family unit offered was essential for the spiritual
growth of its members. Likewise, extended families produced a harmonious,
peaceful social order.

In Islam, women were individuals in their own right whether they were married or single. They had the right to own and dispose of their earnings and property. When a woman married, she kept her own family name instead of taking her husband's.
The groom gave the bride a marriage dowry for her own personal use. Both men and women were required to dress with dignity and modesty. Local customs in some Muslim countries dictated the conventional female dress for those countries.
Muslim parents were honored. Taking
care of the elderly was considered both a blessing and an opportunity for great
spiritual growth. The Prophet taught that Paradise existed at the feet of mothers,
so they were particularly revered; and, that there were three things that would continue to help believers after they died
- prayers on their behalf by a righteous child; charity which they had given;
and the knowledge that they had taught others...
