Diana Artemis was Diana, the Roman goddess of childbirth, fertility, and nature, as well as, Artemis, the Greek goddess of the wilderness, childbirth, fertility, and wild animals. Diana Artemis was a healer who tended the sick with medicinal herbs from her temple garden. As mistress of animals a synonym for Artemis was Potnia Theron. Patroness of the commonwealth, nature spirits, plebians, uncultivated land, wild animals, women in childbirth, and young children, the deer was her Animal Totem. Diana Artemis was often depicted as a huntress with a bow and arrows and a crescent moon above her forehead. She was also frequently accompanied by nature spirit nymphs, as the protectresses of mountains, rivers, and springs. As Artemis, she was mentioned in earlier Asian models of cuneiform texts, the Hesiod "Theogony", and the Homer "Iliad". She was depicted in the form of multibreasted statues because of her role as nurturer protectress of the young of every wild creature. She was also drawn as an almost androgynous figure with wings holding a torch and wearing boots and a pointed cap with wildlife on either side of her. An ancient hunting and animal goddess, as Artemis she was revered in widespread locales throughout western Asia, Greece, and in Ephesus (Turkey). When Ephesus came under Roman Rule, Diana took over the Temple of Artemis. As Diana, Diana Artemis also had a sanctuary on Aventine Hill in Rome.
A Fourth Centuary BCE temple dedicated to Artemis
was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. On May 25th each year statues
of Artemis were carried in procession before around 30,000 people.
