Heathenry Heathen Ásatrú Troth
Glossary Terminology
Landvaettir (Landwights)
The spirits of earth, rocks,
springs, streams, forests, and homes. They do not resonate with discord or loud
noises and will quickly leave an area that radiates entropy or negativity. They
are friendly to humans who honor their purpose and reason for being. Since their
presence in one's environs ensures prosperity and abundance, people often leave
them gifts of food and drink.
Man In The Moon
The Man in the Moon in
English literature, the Moon in Heathenry Ásatrú was always a masculine
presence, while the Sun was feminine. This was the original Way of the Heathen
Troth that was reversed during the ancient Greco-Roman times of Apollo.
Norns (The Three Fates)
The Well of Wyrd from which
the World Tree springs was guarded by three Fates, the Etin maiden goddesses,
Urđr (the past), Verđandi (the present), and Skuld (the future). They reached
into one's past and sprinkled the Heathen World Tree with woven patterns of the
future.
Od
This was the gift of ecstasy
provided to humans by the goddesses and gods. It was what separated humanity
from other animals, and was our eternal link with the goddesses and gods.
Odin's Eye
Represented the immense
wisdom of Odin which he draws on to safeguard Middle Earth and all worthy
creatures from chaos and annihilation for as long as possible. When he drank
from the wisdom well of Mimir, Odin pledged his troth by leaving an eye behind
which he uses to view all that occurs in the Nine Worlds from Hliđskjálf, his
high seat.
Perseverance (Noble Virtue)
One must seriously and
objectively pursue peak performance with modest, impartial endeavor until a
carefully completed outcome results.
Profession (Adoption)
A simple ceremony where a
person commits to Ásatrú by making a solemn oath of allegiance and kinship to
the goddesses and gods of Asgard on an oath ring or another sacred object,
typically performed in the presence of a priest Gođi or a priestess Gyđja and
the rest of the Hearth, Felag, Garth, or Kindred... Continue on
