The Carnac Megaliths, the largest collection of stone monuments in Europe, stretched for around thirteen kilometers from Carnac to the village of Locmariaquer in Brittany, France. Varying from about one to twenty meters in height, the rows of standing stones were frequently plundered over the centuries. Currently numbering more than three thousand, the prehistoric megaliths, fashioned from the local rocks sometime around 4500-3300 BCE, are now under State protection. The three main groupings of Carnac Megaliths have become known as the Menec, Kermario, and Kerlescan Alignments. The one hundred metres wide Menec Alignments extended for more than one thousand metres with vestiges of cromlechs at both edges. The standing stones of the Menec alignment vary in height from less than one metre to about four metres in height. The approximately 1,300 metres long Kermario Alignments had more than one thousand stones aligned in ten rows; and, a Stone Circle at the Eastern edge. The approximately 800 metres long Kerlescan Alignments had around five hundred fifty-five stones up to four metres in height aligned in thirteen rows with a tall Stone Circle of thirty-nine megaliths at the Western edge.
Within the Trinité-sur-Mer community East of the
Kerlescan Alignments in a wooded setting, there was a small group of moss and
ivy covered stones known as the Petit-Ménec Alignments.
Besides the rows of stupendous megaliths, there are many alignments, dolmens, menhirs, and tumuli in the surrounding area. Carnac also has an exceptional beach and the nearby Quiberon peninsula offers many water sports like sailing and wind-surfing.
