Glossary Terminology

Dao (Tao)

The cosmic, mystical, ultimate principle that encompasses everything and lies beneath all form, substance, and being. It is the cause of the continual process of change, and the source of the universe and all of nature, including the human body. Everything from quanta to solar systems coexist in interdependent systems that derive their energy from the harmonic unification of the Yin with the Yang.

Earlier Heaven

An ideal state of existence where everything is in harmony, concurrence, and accord and united together in its connection to the Tao.

Five Elements and Correspondences

The five parts of the sky, water, fire, wood, metal, and earth, which also correspond to the main organs and orifices of the body.

Hsiao

Love within family matters that encompasses: love of parents for their children, of children for their parents, and love among family members.

Jen

Benevolence, compassion, kindness, consideration, and humaneness towards others.

Later Heaven

The nature of the phenomenal world in which there is discord, conflicts, disputes, dissension, and where the Tao has been forgotten.

Li

Ritual, propriety, decorum, correctness, etiquette, and good manners.

Meng Tzu

A philosopher, (371-289 B.C.), who like Confucius traveled from state to state, conversing with the government rulers.

Ming Men
