Background Beliefs Overview Traditions
Christian Baptism was a purification ritual using water that symbolized the cleansing of sin, initiation into a life as a child of God, and unity with the Christ Consiousness.
During the sacrament of
Baptism, water might have been sprinkled over the head of the person being Baptized,
water might have been poured over the head of the person being Baptized, or the
entire body of the person being Baptized might have bee immersed in a pool of water.
Confirmation was a ritual undergone by the faithful usually after the age of discretion when a child had the use of reason; but, generally between the ages of seven to fourteen. After being suitably instructed, the faithful renewed the promises made during baptism.
Catholics believed that an outpouring of the Holy Spirit was bestowed upon the person being confirmed similar to the one bestowed upon the apostles during Pentecost. Afterwards, the faithful were instilled with spiritual wisdom and strength.
The sacrament of Holy Communion (Eucharist) was a ritual done in memory of the Last Supper. During the meal, Jesus gave his disciples bread and wine and asked them to do this in remembrance of him.

Consecrated bread and wine that has been infused with the Christ Consiousness and Divine Grace was shared by members of the Christian community who had attended the Christian Church services.
Anointing of the Sick was a sacrament wherein blessed and consecrated oil was used to anoint the sick. The unction of God was usually administered when a person was close to death, along with the prayers of Last Rites (confession, absolution, a Viaticum Eucharist for the journey).
The sacrament of Confession was the ritual of confessing a person's sins (mortal and venial) to God via the intermediary of a priest. The faithful Christian undertook this ritual on a regular basis by going into a confessional booth inside the Church and confessing to a member of the Christian clergy.
As an intermediary sanctioned by God to bestow his forgiveness upon the penitent, the priests absolved the sinner and determined the appropriate and necessary penance required to assure the forgiveness of sins and the restoration of the person's soul to a state of grace.
The sacrament of Marriage conferred grace and the gift of the Holy Spirit
upon a man and woman when they were joined together as a couple, becoming one,
as they merged together their spiritual and physical bodies and their lives... Go back
