The Sacred Site focal point of Archangel Hamaliel and the Eleventh Ray of Divine Mage is Central Park, which is located in downtown Manhattan in New York City, New York, U.S.A. Encompassing 843 acres, Central Park was the first landscaped public park in the United States. Construction of a park in the center of Manhattan was backed mostly by wealthy merchants and landowners who desired public grounds comparable to those of the cities of London and Paris to enhance the international reputation of New York City. A public park they argued would offer their own families an attractive setting for carriage rides. They also disputed for three years about where to locate the park and how much it would cost. Then in 1853, the New York state legislature gave the City of New York authorization to use the power of eminent domain to acquire more than 700 acres of land in the Center of Manhattan. In order to create the park they subsequently acquired 700 acres by displacing about 1,600 poorer residents from the land between Fifth and Eighth Avenues and 59th and 106th Streets. The landscape was an irregular terrain of swamps and bluffs accented by rocky outcroppings. The families of the people they displaced were Irish farmers and German gardeners. Next they acquired the land of Seneca Village, one of New York City's most stable Afro-American settlements at Eighth Avenue and 82nd Street with three churches and a school. This 1863 land acquisition expanded Central Park to 843 acres and extended its boundaries to 110th Street. Central Park designers selected the "Greensward Plan" of a pastoral landscape in the English tradition. Rolling meadows contrasted with the striking effects of the Ramble and the more formal dress grounds of the Promenade Mall and Bethesda Terrace.
A revised circulation
system plan separated carriage drives, equestrian paths, and pedestrian walks
with more than forty bridges to eliminate grade crossings between the different
routes. After many decades of wrangling about who should exercise political
control over Central Park, a new city charter in 1870 restored local control
with mayor appointed park commissioners... Archangels
